net.c -- minimize changes wrt. github/master branch

Issues:

• delete header (with info on Fokus copyright for introduced changes)
• bring back header after merging github/develop into our code
• delete formatting enhancements (spaces, blanc lines, etc)
• revert back to the not-so-nice style if(x) return(y);

Code changes reverted in a separate commit:

• lots of debugging output.
